LG Refrigerator Problems

Refrigerators have become common need for household now days. Even people in the remote areas are using refrigerators and several electronic companies are producing and promoting refrigerators. LG, Samsung, Whirlpool, Onida are some of the popular brands while considering the refrigerator segment. LG is the most recommended brand for refrigerators for its quality and customer service. Refrigerator requires careful handling and even one small error will cause problems affecting the normal working of refrigerator. There are so many common problems that occur frequently and are faced by several refrigerator customers regularly.

Troubleshooting the Most Common Problems with LG Refrigerators

LG refrigerators are recently in news due to several complaints about their refrigerators especially on the model LFC22760. As one of the companies which have a big stake in the electronics market, LG has been at the forefront of making very powerful refrigerators which have been in use for a long time.

However, in the recent past, owners of many LG refrigerators have reported problems which have gotten many people worried that maybe the company had lost its mojo in this field. A typical LG refrigerator will come with lots of features. If, however, they do no work as advertised, it may present a problem for many users. News of several people losing valuable foods that were stored in refrigerator, cases of bulbs in the refrigerator exploding etc. is being reported.

Exploding Bulbs:

Among the most common LG refrigerator problems is that of exploding bulbs inside the fridge. LG refrigerators have doors that may fool the users into thinking they have shut them when they would not have done so. As long as the doors are not shut tight, the bulb will be kept on. Bulbs produce light by converting electric current into heat and light. The bulb will thus get warm on the inside, but cold on the outside owing to the low temperature of the fridge. It eventually busts.

The main reason for blasts of bulbs in refrigerator is due to not properly closing of refrigerator door. When anybody doesn’t close the door of refrigerator properly, the light will be in the on condition and if it is in the same state for long time due to temperature variance, the bulb blasts resulting in fire inside the refrigerator. Sometimes this fire may turn into blast which can damage part of your house or complete house also.

The remedy for this problem is making sure that the doors are closed tightly.

Problems like obstruction in the path of flow to dispenser, ice maker problems, sensors not working, strange sounds while refrigerator is on (other than sounds that occur while ice is getting saddled at the back side) etc. must be considered as serious problems and they require immediate attention and urgent repairs.

LG Refrigerator Leaking Water:

Another problem that is frequently reported by LG users is water leaking from the refrigerator. There are 5 possible causes to this issue. And they include the following…

(1) – Freeze of the Defrost Drain.

If this occurs, water will flow over the drain, thus dripping to the end of the compartment. Eventually, that water can leak onto the floor.

In this situation, we recommend checking the drain to see if it’s frozen or clogged. If the drain is frozen, we recommend thawing the ice.

Also, we recommend flushing the drain with hot water, ensuring that the debris is cleared.

(2) – Tank Assembly

There might be a leak in the tank assembly. If you find a leak there, you’ll need to replace the water tank.

(3) – Water Inlet Valve

You might have an open water inlet valve. This is the mechanism that sends water to the icemaker and dispenser. If you have a cracked or loosened inlet valve, then water will leak from it.

Be sure to inspect the inlet, and ensure that it’s tightly connected to a water supply line.

(4) – Housing Cracks

Inspect your water filer. Check for any cracks in the housing, and if you find any, then be sure to replace them.

(5) – Filter Head

Your water filter head may be cracked. The seal might not be available, or it might be torn. Be sure to inspect the water filter for cracks, and if you find any, replace the system.

Cracking Shelves:

Other problem that is frequently reported by LG users is cracks and/or breakdown of shelves. This is due to complete ignorance. LG will specify the limit for each shelf or rack and if you put weight above that threshold it can’t tolerate and breaks down. Most LG refrigerator owners who have voiced their concern about the problems with this electronic equipment present the fact that some of the shelves break or crack when in use. Such LG refrigerator problems stem from the fact that each shelf has a stated amount of weight that it can carry comfortably. Most users store more weight in foods and other items on the shelves than the shelves can withstand. The low temperatures in the fridge will likely make the shelves brittle such that they crack with ease or break when the weight is too much to bear.

Availability of Spare Parts:

Another important problem faced by LG users is the spare parts availability. Though it is true that LG spare parts are tough to find, if you maintain your refrigerator properly, you won’t need any spare parts throughout its life time .Some owners of LG refrigerators have voiced their concerns as far as the availability of the spare parts for their fridges is concerned. Most people agree that there is a shortage in the number of spare parts available for their machines. An LG refrigerator may require various spare parts such as the lighting bulbs and shelves or cooling coil, but it has proven a tricky situation. To obtain these parts, one should consult with the nearest LG service center. If they do not have the spare parts in stock, they can order it from the parent company in a few days.

LG Refrigerator Using Up Too Much Electricity:

Among the most common LG refrigerator problems reported are that the fridges are using up too much energy. This problem has been common among new users who claim the electricity bill has considerably gone up after buying the fridge. What they need to know is that LG refrigerators come with various modes which determine the temperatures inside the fridge. If one sets the temperature to the lowest level, be sure that the electricity bill will go up no matter what happens. The remedy for this is to set the fridge to the required temperature levels only.

LG Refrigerator Not Cooling Enough:

Another LG refrigerator problem reported is that of poor cooling by the fridge.

(1) Condenser Coil Issue

This problem occurs when the condenser coil of the fridge is dirty. The condenser coil is the part of the LG refrigerators at the back that looks like a coiled pipe. Their purpose is to spread out heat which goes through them. When clean, the coil dissipates heat from the fridge allowing for the proper cooling of the internals of the fridge. However, when dirty, it will fail to let go of the heat and thus retain it within the internal compartments of the fridge.

Be sure to check your condenser coils. If they’re dirty, give them a good cleaning.

(2) Condenser Fan Motor Issue

Condenser fan motors draw air through their coils. If the fan motor isn’t operating properly, then this means that the fridge won’t cool correctly.

To check if the motor isn’t working, look at the fan blade. Try to find obstructions in it. After that, turn off the fan motor’s blade by-hand. And if your blade isn’t spinning freely, then replace the motor’s condenser.

You can use multi-meters to check for the fan motor’s continuity. And if there isn’t any, then replace it.

(3) Evaporator Fan Issue

Evaporator fans bring in air through the cooling coils, while circulating it to the different compartments of the fridge/freezer.

If the fan isn’t working, then it won’t circulate air to the rest of the fridge. And here, it’s necessary to check if the fan motor is defective.

Try turning the fan blade by-hand. If there’s friction, then you probably need a motor replacement.

Problems with the Ice Maker:

Those who reported problems with the ice maker state that the ice cubes did not form as independently as required. Rather, they form as a single block of ice which makes them hard to use. This problem will occur if the temperature in the freezer goes beyond 10 degrees Fahrenheit. This aspect causes the buildup of frost in the freezer. The formed frost will jeopardize the free circulation of air in the evaporator coil. Ensure that the defrost heater is working properly to prevent such problems. Most users do not realize that the problems with their fridges come from their own negligence.

Damaged Foods:

The complaints about damaged good are of two kinds namely rotten foods or broken food items such as eggs. The rotten foods scenario occurs when the temperatures in the fridge are not low enough to preserve the food. This may be as a result of not closing the fridge door well or having a dirty condenser coil. Ensure one shuts the doors well and has a clean condenser coil. Cleaning the coil is not a technical issue and can be done at home either with a brush with long bristles or with a piece of soft clothing. Broken foods such as eggs occurs when one slams the door too hard or stuffs in too many items than the fridge can accommodate.

Too Noisy or very loud:

Another problem reported is LG refrigerator is noisy or loud, this happens when one of the doors are opened, either the evaporator or condenser fan motor or fan blade be at fault. Firstly, check out the evaporator fan blade in the freezer behind the back panel. Try rotating it by hand. If the fan blade does not rotate freely, check if something caught in the blade. If the evaporator motor is damaged, it often generates a lot of noise. You may have to replace it.

Then check the condenser motor or fan blade in the back underside of the refrigerator to find if anything that blocks. There might be something obstruction in the condenser fan motor blade, or the condenser fan motor bearings might be damaged. To check this, you may have to remove the rear access panel which is at the back of the refrigerator .

LG Refrigerator Not Defrosting:

Another problem reported is LG refrigerator is not defrosting: To know if refrigerator is defrosting or not, check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat.

The defrost heater runs on several times throughout the day to melt any ice that is build up on the evaporator coils.Very often, the refrigerator has to go through a defrost cycle to melt this frost that may have accumulated on the coils from the moisture in the air. If the defrost heater is defective and the ice formed on the coil is not melting, the ice eventually builds up to the point that it blocks airflow. Use a multi-meter to test the continuity of defrost cycles. If the defrost heater does not have continuous cycles, you may have to replace it.

These are the common problems and any company’s refrigerator will get them if the maintenance is poor or low.

In general small problems of refrigerators are neglected and when they turn into serious problems people generally blame the refrigerator companies. If you go through LG customer reviews, most of them are positive and LG refrigerator users recommend them to others. But LG requires proper care else you will end up with problems.

Got a Refrigerator? Here are Some Maintenance Tips to Keep it In-Check!

Fridges are a vital yet expensive utility. And you can’t afford to replace one too often…

Do you have a LG fridge ,then you have to take a proper care of the refrigerator in order to avoid any problems to occur. And today, we’ll help you with that.

We’ve got 4 routine habits to follow. Apply them, and enjoy a refrigerator that’s always in top-notch condition!

First – Clean Condenser Coils Twice/Year

A condenser coil’s job is to cool your refrigerator.

They’re a mechanism that removes heat from your refrigerator and freezer. And they often look like large radiator coils behind (or underneath) your refrigerator’s structure.

When too much dust collects on the coils, removing heat becomes difficult. And this leads to difficulty cooling the fridge, and more energy consumption.

As a worst-case scenario, heat might build up, thus ruining your refrigerator’s wiring.

What to Do

Check your condenser coil cleaning instructions in your refrigerator’s manual. Get an idea on how often you should clean.

As for the process, you’ll need to disconnect the refrigerator from the power outlet. From there, use a bristle brush and vacuum to take off the dust.

Second – Clean or Replace Your Gasket

Gaskets are the rubber seals which outline freezer doors and fridges. They’re often the overlooked portion, and they have the vital job of sealing warm air out.

You’ll need to occasionally clean the gasket. You’ll need to use a spray too (preferably Goo Gone Concentrated).

On the other hand, if your gasket is worn out, you’ll need to consider a replacement. Those wears usually occur as a result of excess heat.

And no worries, replacing gasket isn’t a serious issue. They’re usually cheap to swap out!

Third – Defrost

Refrigerators and freezers build up excess ice over time, which takes up space. Not to mention, the ice gets in the way of cooling.

You need to defrost them. And how you do so depends on the type of freezer or refrigerator you have!

Manual Defrosting Freezers and Refrigerators

When frost fully accumulates on the insides of a freezer, and it reaches a 1 ½ inch thickness, you’ll need to defrost.

Start by taking the food out of the fridge/freezer. Switch off the thermostat, and proceed to unplug your fridge.

From there, let the frost melt. After everything melts successful, switch back on the unit again, then wait for the unit to get to operating temperature before adding the food back in.

Self-Defrosting

Here, you won’t need to do much. Self-defrost refrigerators heat up cooling parts a bit to melt the excess ice, where the water will drop onto a pain within the fridge.

You need to ensure that the water doesn’t evaporate. And this requires a periodical cleaning of the pan to prevent bacteria and odor accumulation.

Also, you’ll need to use minor amounts of detergent and some warm water. So be sure to check your owner manual for exact instructions.

Fourth – Interior Cleaning

Once a week, get a cloth and damp it in warm water.

After switching off your refrigerator, proceed to wipe spills and crumbs on the walls and shelves. Here, a multi-purpose cleaner can help you remove stains, and without trouble!

Making a Choice on Refrigerator While Buying

Customers are advised only to take the types of fridges which will fit their needs rather than buying due to the excitement with features. A fridge that is too big will likely cost more to maintain given that it requires more power to cool its internal compartments and may come with features one does not need yet require a lot of power to maintain. It may also take up unnecessary space.

Despite of the above mentioned problems LG is still favorite choice for many users while buying refrigerators. It is because of their durable and long lasting nature with less power usage. Unlike other brands, in LG you will have the flexibility to choose the refrigerator according to your needs.  There are several models available like cabinet depth refrigerators, side by side cooling door model, bottom freezers and French door refrigerator etc. in LG and LG insists its customers to buy the refrigerator not by model but according to their requirements and needs.
