You see, brown is an easy color to mix. It uses the basic colors of yellow, blue, and red, where you won’t need any others.

All you have to do is mix a primary with a complementary color. And you keep doing so until you get the type of brown you best seek.

Below, we’ll show you 5 mixes to try. They’re all effective, so be sure to experiment with each!

As mentioned earlier, brown can be made by mixing red, yellow, and blue with their respective complementary colors.

Mixing Red and Green.

You can create a ruddy brown color through a mix of green and red colors. However, you’ll be using much less red than green, where green is the closest color to brown.

Ensure that the red is only 5-10% of the total mix. By adding more red, you darken the brown color. And by adding more green, you make it lighter.

Mixing Orange and Blue.

With a mix of orange and a small amount of blue, you can also reach brown (with a bit of a chocolaty look).

Blue should only comprise 5-10% of the total mix – with orange being the closer color to brown.

You can deepen the brown using more blue paint. Or, you can make it lighter by adding more orange.

Mixing Yellow and Purple.

It’s important we start by noting that purple isn’t a primary color. It’s a secondary one, created by mixing blue and yellow.

After purple is created, you can then mix it with yellow in order to create brown.

Similar to the previous two mixes, the amount of yellow you add is much less than that of purple. But, by mixing purple and yellow, you get a brown with a mauve tint.

If you’d like a lighter brown, add more yellow. Add extra purple for further darkening.

Mixing All Colors.

Instead of mixing two colors, you can mix everything and still create brown.

To start, you need to mix dark blue and dark green in equivalent portions. The black you use for the green and blue should also be in equivalent portions.

Finally, add in yellow and red (both in equal proportions), and mix everything thoroughly to create brown.

You can add in more yellow if you feel the need to lighten the brown color.

Other Methods of Making Brown.

The previous method looks at mixing darker shades of primary colors, and a few secondary colors.

That approach might be too complex for you. And in that case, you can settle with the mixing of primary colors only (blue, red, and yellow).

By adding more yellow, you lighten the final brown. And, by adding more red and blue, you give it a darker shade (though try adding the red and blue in equal proportions).
